Capcom achieved record-breaking financial performance during the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013. The company reported net sales of 45.5 billion yen and operating income of 6.5 billion yen, representing significant year-over-year growth compared to the same period in 2011. These results, which reached all-time highs for a first-half period, were driven primarily by the robust performance of the Digital Contents business, supported by the launch of major titles such as Resident Evil 6, the expansion of the social gaming sector in Japan, and increased revenue from downloadable content.
The Digital Contents segment served as the primary catalyst for growth, contributing 14.2 billion yen in additional sales and 2.6 billion yen in operating income. While the Amusement Equipments division also saw gains through strong OEM performance in the Pachislo and Slot machine business, the Arcade Operations segment experienced a slight decline, with existing arcade sales dropping 6% year-over-year. Despite these mixed results across segments, the company’s overall profitability remained strong, with net income rising to 4.1 billion yen.
The balance sheet reflects a strategic focus on long-term development, evidenced by an increase in work-in-progress for game software to 23.9 billion yen, signaling a growing pipeline of titles. Financing activities during this period included an increase in short-term borrowings to 11.5 billion yen to support operations. The company maintains a cautious outlook, acknowledging that performance remains sensitive to volatile market conditions, the success of individual hit titles, and broader economic factors such as exchange rates and shifting consumer needs within the global entertainment industry.
