Distilling the key insights…
Capcom’s financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, demonstrate significant growth in both sales and earnings, driven primarily by the strong performance of its Digital Contents business. Net sales for the six-month period reached 45.5 billion yen, a substantial increase from 29.2 billion yen in the same period of the previous year. Operating income rose to 6.5 billion yen, while net income climbed to 4.1 billion yen. These gains were largely attributed to the successful launch of major packaged software titles and the continued expansion of online and mobile content.
The Digital Contents segment remains the company's primary revenue driver, bolstered by the record-breaking initial shipment of 4.5 million units for Resident Evil 6. Despite a reduction in the total number of titles released compared to the prior year, the company achieved 7.4 million units in total package software sales, benefiting from the concentration of resources on high-performing titles. Additionally, the online segment saw growth in social game membership, which surpassed 6.4 million users in Japan, and the Beeline mobile brand achieved over 74 million cumulative downloads.
While the Digital Contents segment thrived, the Arcade Operations business experienced a 6% decline in existing store sales, attributed to a cooling of the post-earthquake demand surge seen in the previous year. Conversely, the Amusement Equipments business saw a significant turnaround, with operating income reaching 1.3 billion yen due to the success of pachinko and pachislo machines. Looking ahead, the company maintains its full-year forecast, focusing on cost management, the continued distribution of downloadable content, and the expansion of its development footprint in Asian markets to sustain momentum.
