Mobile gamers capitalized on holiday-themed in-game promotions.
Black Friday 2019 served as a record-breaking day for the United States mobile gaming industry, with consumer spending reaching an estimated $69.7 million across the Apple App Store and Google Play. This figure represents the highest single-day revenue ever generated for the category, reflecting a 25 percent year-over-year increase. This growth rate is the most significant observed since 2016, signaling an intensifying trend of mobile gamers capitalizing on holiday-themed in-game promotions.
The revenue distribution between platforms highlights the dominance of the App Store, which accounted for $42.1 million, or 60 percent of the total daily spend. Google Play contributed the remaining $27.6 million, though it experienced a more aggressive year-over-year growth rate of approximately 34 percent compared to the App Store’s 20 percent. Within their respective ecosystems, games remained a primary driver of commerce, representing 68 percent of total App Store spending and 84 percent of all Google Play spending.
Individual title performance underscored the efficacy of holiday-specific monetization strategies. Marvel Contest of Champions emerged as the top-grossing game of the day, generating $2.7 million. Playrix also saw significant success, with Gardenscapes and Homescapes both securing spots in the top 10, with the former achieving its highest-grossing performance of the year. These findings, derived from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence data, suggest that mobile publishers successfully leverage the broader consumer spending mindset and the prevalence of discounted gift cards during the Black Friday period to drive substantial revenue spikes.
