Create free accounthello and welcome to biz daily I'm John drill so the big news today is that gree the Japanese mobile home publisher has announced its setting up two new offices to one of those is in Germany in Berlin and one is an Australia in Melbourne so the reason that's kind of interesting is that last week the big news was Green had laid off from over under people from its main San Francisco office so obviously the two things are kind of linked it's kind of gree as it has now kind of announced it has this kind of them kind of strategic curve change in its international operations one of those is to focus on more on Europe so it's not particularly up in the past and not being very successful in Europe perhaps for that reason so it's opening a new office in Berlin and the office isn't will be doing game development an office is going to be doing kind of important live operations and support
and QA and localization and community support and you jump you use oxygen and then these kind of like things that the car might seem quite soft services but actually very important if you want to run a successful free-to-play my ball game so you need local people kind of running those events may be different events in Europe to events running in the state and maybe the early in Japan so cup is really focusing on that and agrees now said that is one of its for ki kind of changes to its kind of strategy it wants to focus much more in Europe because Europe is a fully lucrative market image very competitive obviously but um it is that's still a good market to be operating in and villains is a very good play so throw some gay milk was there a kiss word is the most famous also game GL aerial games as well but Berlin where it blends really good in the past news for mobile Internet companies and mobile monetization companies in fact the guy
who's heading up the Berlin office for gree come from fiber what is a mobile monetization company so presumably that's had let me start now maybe a big game governments do in the future but moment i can adjust focus on monetization the mobile office is pretty different actually so that's an acquisition of an existing robot game developer and feel called to touch with a double eye so they're best known for kind of a kind of hardcore mid-core Spurs strategy game called heroes of war that was published by nexon which is Korean publisher all the particular successful but it's what Greece hoping is those guys what it likes about that company was it like stare technology degree hasn't particularly made a lot of them kind of games that would appeal over to the west market in Japan there's bit more card card battle and 2d and kind of menu based stuff and that doesn't really work so well in the west so and being what seemed to be having
agrees they kind of want to get some games up for the Western market bit more kind of 3d bit more kind of better graphics and actually one of its strategic focus now is to focus on kind of the on technology innovation technology so I think we'll be seeing a lot from that that let that team in terms of kind of getting good some good looking games out for the kind of Australian us Western Western markets which you know a bit more focused on emoni gameplay than the Asian markets a bit more focused on maybe the Kinect collection kind of my connector meta game um so I guess the other kind of interesting thing about movies what you're saying isn't kind of greed looking to kind of working in places a bit less expensive so some just goes the right place to operating office if you're very profitable and if you're having games at all because you can bring in great talent and it going to grow that that business but if you are having your games that are preferable which means currently crees situation for an off the games and then obviously makes sense to come alone take people
out of a half the kind of high value how expensive locations and kind of start moving I've start hiring people in other locations that there may be less expensive I guess that's kind of when you run in a big global companies that's the common problem you have that you have people there grease many thousand people working bubble then you cannot meet sometimes you have people in the wrong place and people can long project and its hard to come shut down both whenever your shank something they are new products dying up something kind of somewhere else so that's the kind of swings and roundabouts of mobile game environment moment gives us lots of things to write about so I guess that's a small kind of benefit for us at least anyways that's a nice today maybe more news tomorrow I'm sure so come back with why don't what it is I'll see you then
GREE, the Japanese mobile game publisher, is undergoing a significant strategic restructuring of its international operations. This pivot follows a recent reduction in force at its San Francisco headquarters, where approximately 30 percent of the staff were laid off. To recalibrate its global footprint, the company is shifting its focus toward the European and Australian markets, establishing new offices in Berlin and Melbourne to better align its development and operational capabilities with Western consumer preferences.
The Berlin office is primarily tasked with enhancing live operations, community support, quality assurance, and localization. By establishing a physical presence in Germany, GREE aims to better navigate the competitive European market, leveraging local expertise to manage regional events and monetization strategies. The leadership for this branch has been recruited from the mobile monetization sector, signaling a clear intent to optimize revenue generation within the region.
Simultaneously, the expansion into Melbourne involves the acquisition of the mobile game developer Twiitch. This move is driven by a need to modernize GREE’s product portfolio, which has historically relied on card-battle and menu-based titles that struggle to gain traction in Western markets. By integrating Twiitch’s technology and expertise in 3D, mid-core strategy games, GREE intends to produce titles that feature the high-fidelity graphics and complex meta-game mechanics favored by Western players. Beyond product innovation, the move to Melbourne reflects a broader cost-optimization strategy, as the company seeks to relocate talent from expensive hubs like San Francisco to more cost-effective regions. This restructuring highlights the ongoing volatility in the global mobile gaming sector, where companies must constantly balance operational costs with the need for localized, high-quality content.
