The study frames this presence as central to the medium.
This study examines whether video games genuinely transform women's lives, and it answers with a qualified yes: individual gains are real, but they do not automatically scale into structural change. Rather than treating transformation as an inherently positive property of games, the authors frame it as a contested and conditional process shaped by existing inequalities. The analysis draws on desk research, semi-structured interviews, and roughly 30 interviews with players, industry professionals, and consultants, situating the discussion within European and global contexts.
On the individual side, the findings document meaningful benefits, including social connection, stress relief, skill development such as language learning, confidence building, and identity exploration. Women make up 43.5% of Europe's roughly 128 million players, a substantial presence that underscores how central they are to the medium's audience. Yet the structural picture is far less equitable. Women hold only 24.9% of positions in the European games workforce, a global gender pay gap of 22% persists, and 59% of women gamers report harassment from male players. Estimates of women's representation in industry leadership, around 20–30% globally, reinforce the sense that power remains concentrated.
The authors conclude that coping strategies such as self-protection against harassment, while understandable, shift the burden of adaptation onto individuals rather than challenging the institutions and cultural norms that produce exclusion. Hiring practices that favor long-tenured workers, unequal mentoring access, and diversity initiatives that remain incremental or marketing-driven all constrain change. The study therefore calls for coordinated reform at personal, community, and systemic levels, with the industry itself redefining its hiring, promotion, and workplace norms. Its final section consists of a bibliography of academic and industry sources, which serves as the basis for the study's broader claims rather than offering independent findings.
