GameDev Reports
The analysis covers games released between January 1 and October 13, 2026, tracked on iPhone, iPad, and Google Play worldwide.
AppMagic examined 158 mobile games released between January 1 and October 13, 2026, that had surpassed $1 million in lifetime in-app purchase revenue by October 17, 2026. The analysis covers iPhone, iPad, and Google Play worldwide, using AppMagic estimates, and excludes 36 games earning at least half their revenue in China because local Android stores are not visible to the tracking data. Ad revenue is not counted. The central finding is that the speed of reaching a first million dollars varies sharply by genre, IP status, and target market, and that a slow start does not necessarily limit long-term earnings.
The median game in the sample took 75.5 days to reach $1 million, though AppMagic cautions that faster-reaching games have also simply had more time to accumulate revenue. Puzzle games were the slowest, with a median of 126 days, yet they had the highest median lifetime revenue among genres with at least five games, at $4.3 million, roughly double the RPG median of $2 million despite RPGs reaching the milestone in 62.5 days. AppMagic attributes this to launch strategy: puzzle developers tend to test and iterate before scaling, while RPG launches arrive largely complete with substantial marketing. Merge-2 and Sort Puzzle titles dominated the puzzle category, accounting for 80% of its revenue.
IP-based games reached the first million far more quickly than original titles: 48% of the 42 IP-based games did so within 30 days, compared with 6% of the 116 original games. Their median time was 35.5 days versus 83.5 days, though the median revenue gap was smaller, at $2.6 million versus $2 million. AppMagic notes that IP holders typically take a revenue share. Geographically, games focused on South Korea reached the milestone fastest (median 53 days), followed by Japan (60 days) and Taiwan and Hong Kong (73.5 days), while North America-focused games took a median of 89 days. Though North America-focused titles reached the milestone more slowly, they accounted for more than half of the sample's total revenue, at $455.3 million, and had the highest median revenue at $3.5 million.
Finally, AppMagic compared early milestones with recent performance, finding that a delayed first million does not preclude strong later growth. Top Lords earned $6.9 million over the final 30 days of the window, and Family Farm Merge, which took 214 days to reach the milestone, earned $2.4
