GameDev Reports
The median top-10% game gained 63 followers in the October 2026 festival, down from 121 in June 2026 and 173 in October 2025, while the median festival game gained only 5.
The October 2026 Steam Next Fest analysis from GameDiscoverCo examines which demos drew the most players and wishlists during the festival, and how competitive conditions have shifted compared with earlier events. Its estimates of new wishlists and peak concurrent users (CCU) come from GameDiscoverCo Pro data, while unique player counts are drawn from the top 50 most popular demos published by Valve, and historical comparisons rely on Steam follower growth.
By player count, co-op titles aimed at groups of friends dominated, led by the asymmetric game Worst Class Ever with roughly 600,000 players. Many leaders were already popular before the festival began, suggesting that Next Fest tends to amplify trends already in motion rather than create them from scratch, though some new entries such as Abyssal Lapidary and ArcheAge Chronicles also broke through. In peak CCU, Probably Stolen, Worst Class Ever, and Character House led, with roughly 1,500 CCU needed to enter the top 20.
By new wishlists, Probably Stolen gained an estimated 160,900, followed by Abyssal Lapidary at 121,400 and ArcheAge Chronicles at 93,200. Mid-tier games ranked 11 to 30 saw gains between 29,500 and 51,300 wishlists, below the 40,000 to 78,000 range seen at the June 2026 festival.
The festival itself was markedly larger, featuring 7,319 demos, up 67% from June and nearly 2.5 times the figure from a year earlier. Despite this growth, the odds of success have declined: the median top-10% game gained 63 followers versus 121 in June and 173 in October 2025, and the median festival game gained only 5 followers. GameDiscoverCo attributes this to intensifying competition and developers releasing demos before the event.
