This is the second reduction in force for the company. A smaller round of cuts occurred in September 2022.
Team Liquid initiated a new round of staff reductions in January 2023, marking the second such event for the organization following a smaller round of cuts in September 2022. While the exact number of affected employees and the specific departments impacted remain undisclosed, the layoffs appear to have primarily affected staff with medium-length tenures. The organization, which maintains a global headcount estimated between 51 and 100 employees, declined to provide official comment regarding the scope of the restructuring.
The layoffs occur within a broader context of significant contraction across the global esports, gaming, and technology sectors during early 2023. During the same period, major industry players including Microsoft, Google, Riot Games, and 100 Thieves also implemented workforce reductions. Despite these cuts, Team Liquid continues to maintain active recruitment efforts, with 13 open job listings across international locations including Brazil, the Netherlands, Los Angeles, and Berlin.
Team Liquid is owned by aXiomatic Gaming, which secured a $450 million valuation following a $35 million funding round in May 2022. The parent company maintains a diverse investment portfolio, including stakes in Epic Games and Niantic Labs. The situation remains a developing story as the organization navigates these internal adjustments amidst a wider industry-wide trend of downsizing.
