See it on page 3The European video games industry demonstrated remarkable resilience and economic vitality throughout 2020, serving as a critical pillar of the digital economy despite the operational disruptions caused by the global pandemic. With a combined turnover of €16.6 billion and a workforce of 74,000 employees across 4,600 studios, the sector maintained consistent momentum. While established hubs in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom continue to anchor the market, emerging powerhouses in Sweden and Poland have significantly accelerated their growth trajectories. Notably, Sweden experienced a substantial surge in turnover, rising from €1.87 billion to €3.31 billion between 2018 and 2020, underscoring the rapid expansion occurring across the continent.
The industry’s long-term stability is supported by a sophisticated ecosystem of public funding and educational infrastructure. Governments across Europe have implemented a diverse array of R&D aid, including grants, loans, and tax credits, to foster innovation. This financial support is complemented by a robust talent pipeline, evidenced by over 400 educational institutions offering specialized game development and vocational programs. This commitment to human capital is essential, as the industry continues to evolve its workforce, which currently includes 22% female representation.
Technological focus remains bifurcated between PC/Mac and mobile/tablet platforms, with many studios adopting multi-format development strategies to maximize reach. Regional preferences are distinct, as evidenced by the dominance of PC/Mac development in markets like Ireland and Spain, contrasted with the mobile-first orientation of studios in Belarus, Lithuania, and Finland. By excluding retail and service-based entities to focus exclusively on developers and publishers, these findings highlight a mature, innovation-driven sector that is well-positioned for sustained international competitiveness.
