Routing payments through a local entity in the player's country, rather than cross-border, raises payment approval rates.
Local Advantage. Local payment routing increases payment approval rates by 8.4 percentage points.
Analyzing over $1 billion in mobile game direct-to-consumer (DTC) transactions, the findings demonstrate that payment infrastructure decisions—specifically regarding local acquiring, payment methods, and financing options—significantly impact revenue, approval rates, and player retention. The core thesis posits that optimizing these technical payment layers is a critical, often overlooked driver of financial performance for game studios.
Key findings indicate that routing payments through local entities rather than cross-border channels increases approval rates by an average of 8.4 percentage points. This advantage is most pronounced for credit card transactions, which see a 9.4-point gain, compared to more modest improvements for digital wallets like Google Pay and Apple Pay. The data suggests that local acquiring mitigates the risk-aversion of card issuers, who are more likely to decline cross-border transactions.
The analysis also highlights the efficacy of local alternative payment methods (APMs). A case study of 44,000 Brazilian players reveals that Pix, a direct bank transfer system, outperforms credit cards and digital wallets in long-term retention. While initial purchase rates are similar across methods, players using Pix are significantly more likely to complete third and fourth purchases, as the direct connection avoids the recurring friction of card-based fraud checks. Furthermore, Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL) options are identified as a strong indicator of high-value players, with Klarna and Afterpay orders showing 25.7% and 11.7% higher average order values, respectively, compared to credit cards.
These insights are derived from a year of transaction data processed through a Merchant of Record stack. The findings conclude that while individual optimizations may appear modest, their cumulative effect is substantial, enabling publishers to achieve higher order success rates and more accurate lifetime value predictions.
