The United States video game market experienced a slight contraction in 2024, with total revenue reaching $58.65 billion, representing a 1.1% decline compared to the previous year. Despite this overall dip, the sector demonstrated resilience in content spending, which totaled $50.6 billion—the second-highest annual figure in national history. This performance was bolstered by a 2% increase in game content sales and a 6% rise in accessory spending, which helped offset a significant 25% decline in hardware revenue, which fell to $4.85 billion.
Market performance was heavily driven by established franchises and sports simulations. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 secured the position of the best-selling game of 2024, marking the 16th consecutive year that the Call of Duty franchise has led the market in full-game dollar sales. Sports titles maintained a dominant presence, accounting for five of the top ten best-selling games of the year, with EA Sports College Football 25 emerging as the best-selling sports game in US history. The year-end charts also highlighted the longevity of older titles, with eight games released prior to 2024 remaining among the top sellers.
In the hardware segment, the PlayStation 5 emerged as the year's best-selling console by both unit and dollar sales, while the Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch followed in dollar and unit rankings, respectively. A notable shift in consumer behavior was the continued adoption of digital-only hardware, which accounted for 45% of all PlayStation 5 units and 44% of all Xbox Series units sold throughout the year. Data for these findings was compiled by Circana, reflecting physical and digital sales from participating publishers, excluding independent developers who do not report data to the firm.
