Total video game sales reached $4.118 billion in May 2023.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom emerged as the best-selling video game in the United States for May 2023, serving as the only new release to break into the monthly top-selling list. This performance highlights the significant market impact of the title, which achieved 10 million copies sold within its first three days of availability. The data, provided by industry-tracking firm Circana, reflects a broader positive trend in the gaming sector, with total video game sales reaching $4.118 billion in May, a 12% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
Market performance across segments showed varied results. Spending on video game content rose 9% to $3.6 billion, driven largely by a 58% surge in console full-game and add-on content spending, which successfully offset declines in the mobile and PC sectors. Hardware sales also saw a robust 56% increase, totaling $338 million for the month. Despite these monthly gains, year-to-date content spending remains down 2% compared to 2022, while hardware spending has grown by 23%.
The analysis covers the U.S. video game market, incorporating physical and digital sales data across console, cloud, mobile, portable, PC, and VR platforms. Notably, the rankings for Nintendo titles are based on physical sales only, as the publisher does not provide digital data to the tracking firm. The findings suggest that while major releases like Tears of the Kingdom drive significant consumer interest and hardware engagement, the overall market continues to navigate shifting spending patterns between platforms and established software franchises.
