The global gaming industry experienced a significant contraction in deal activity during the first half of 2023, characterized by a sharp decline in both the volume and total value of transactions. The industry recorded 324 closed deals totaling $4.1 billion, representing an 89.6% decrease in total value compared to the $39.7 billion reported in the first half of 2022. This downturn was driven by strategic investors reevaluating portfolios and widespread corporate restructuring, with the mergers and acquisitions landscape suffering the most severe impact, seeing a 31-fold decrease in total value.
Private investment also faced substantial headwinds, with total value dropping fivefold year-over-year. While the number of venture capital deals actually increased to 73, their total value fell by 53% as investors shifted focus toward supporting existing studios with bridge or follow-on rounds rather than funding new ventures. Early-stage investments remained the primary driver of activity, with North America leading in deal volume, followed by Western Europe, the MENA region, and Asia. Andreessen Horowitz emerged as the most active venture capital fund during this period.
Despite the broader market cooling, specific segments showed resilience. Investment in AI-focused game companies saw a modest increase, with 19 deals totaling $214.1 million. Analysts remain cautiously optimistic for the remainder of the year, anticipating a recovery in deal activity in the second half of 2023. This expected rebound is supported by the closure of several high-profile acquisitions, such as those involving Scopely and Rovio, as well as the potential finalization of the Activision Blizzard deal.
