The mobile gaming landscape in January 2020 was characterized by significant revenue growth, driven largely by the influence of the Chinese market. PUBG Mobile secured the top position globally, generating over $176.3 million in gross user spending, a figure nearly four times higher than its performance in January 2019. Honor of Kings followed as the second-highest earner with $151.3 million, marking a 25 percent year-over-year increase. Both titles are published by Tencent, underscoring the company’s dominant position in the global mobile sector.
Data for these rankings were derived from the Sensor Tower Store Intelligence platform, covering gross user spending across the Apple App Store and Google Play worldwide throughout January 2020. The analysis excludes revenue from third-party Android marketplaces. Beyond the top two titles, the list of highest-grossing games included Candy Crush Saga, AFK Arena, and Clash of Clans.
A notable trend during this period was the rapid ascent of titles from Lilith Games. AFK Arena experienced a surge in performance, reaching $88.3 million in revenue following its launch in China, which accounted for 70.8 percent of its monthly spending. Additionally, Rise of Kingdoms achieved its best month to date with $63.1 million. With two games each in the top 10, Tencent and Lilith Games highlight the substantial impact of Chinese consumer spending on global mobile revenue trends. These findings illustrate a period of strong financial momentum for established mobile franchises and successful regional expansions.
