Neogames Finland
The Finnish game industry experienced significant expansion throughout 2015, characterized by robust growth in turnover, employment, and output. Total industry turnover reached 2.4 billion euros, representing a 33 percent increase over the previous year. This performance significantly outpaced global industry growth, cementing Finland’s position as a top-three European hub for game development operating income. Exports remain the primary driver of this success, accounting for 95 percent of total revenue.
The industry landscape in 2015 comprised 290 active companies, with 29 new entities established during the year. While the pace of new company formation has slowed since 2012, the emergence of second-round startups—founded by experienced industry veterans—indicates a maturing and well-established sector. Employment figures rose to 2,700 professionals, with the majority of both companies and talent concentrated in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Despite a competitive mobile market that has increased the financial barriers to entry regarding marketing and user acquisition, 150 commercial games were published across mobile, console, PC, and emerging platforms like virtual reality.
Financial activity remained strong, with 40 million dollars in foreign investment distributed across eight companies. While the number of studios receiving funding decreased compared to 2014, the total capital influx grew, reflecting a focus on larger, more strategic investments from both Western and Asian markets. The industry continues to benefit from a deep pipeline of talent, supported by active non-professional development communities and events. Looking ahead, the sector maintains a positive outlook, driven by high-profile releases and continued investment in established studios, signaling sustained momentum for the Finnish gaming ecosystem.
