72% of children aged 10-17 plan to ask for video game-related gifts.
Video games represent the most sought-after gift category for U.S. children during the holiday season, according to research conducted by the Entertainment Software Association. The study, which surveyed 501 children aged 10–17 and 500 adults across the United States between September and October 2023, reveals that 72% of children intend to request video game-related items. This preference outpaces other popular categories, including money or gift cards at 70%, clothing at 66%, and general electronics at 62%.
The data highlights a strong demand for diverse gaming products, with 39% of children requesting game subscriptions, 38% seeking consoles, and 32% asking for accessories. Interest in gaming is also reflected in adult purchasing plans, as 57% of parents report they intend to buy video game gifts for the holidays, with an average planned expenditure of $485 per household.
In response to these findings, the industry emphasizes the importance of parental oversight and digital safety. The analysis encourages caregivers to utilize the Entertainment Software Rating Board’s age and content rating system to make informed purchasing decisions. Furthermore, the findings advocate for the active use of parental controls—which allow for the management of playtime, spending, and online communication—as well as the establishment of clear household guidelines regarding responsible gaming behavior. By promoting these tools, the industry aims to ensure that video games remain a positive and safe medium for family connection.
