Video games are a primary form of entertainment.
The 2026 Essential Facts About the U.S. Video Game Industry report, published by the Entertainment Software Association, examines the prevalence and cultural impact of gaming across the United States. The research highlights that video games have become a primary form of entertainment, with 212.3 million Americans—representing 67% of the population—playing at least one hour per week. This figure reflects a 3% increase in the total player base compared to the previous year, with the average age of players now reaching 37.
The findings demonstrate that gaming is a cross-generational activity, with participation rates ranging from over 80% among Gen Alpha and Gen Z to 32% among the Silent Generation. Gender distribution remains relatively balanced, and the report notes that adult players are more likely to be employed full-time or have children than the general population. Furthermore, parents show high levels of engagement, with 75% of American parents playing games weekly and 81% participating in gaming sessions with their children.
Methodologically, the data was gathered through a 20-minute online survey conducted by YouGov between February 11 and February 25, 2026. The sample included 13,545 respondents, with results weighted to ensure representation across age, gender, ethnicity, education, and geographic region.
Beyond demographics, the analysis reveals that mobile devices are the most popular platform for gaming across all age groups. Players consistently report positive perceptions of the medium, citing stress relief, mental stimulation, and social connection as primary benefits. Additionally, a majority of players view video games as providing superior entertainment value for their money compared to other media formats like music, television, and literature.
