This represents an 11% year-over-year increase.
Tencent’s financial results for the second quarter of 2023 reflect a period of moderate growth, though performance fell short of market expectations. The company reported total revenue of 149.2 billion yuan ($20.6 billion), representing an 11% year-over-year increase, while net profit reached 26.2 billion yuan ($3.6 billion), a 41% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Despite these gains, both metrics trailed analyst projections of $20.8 billion and $4.58 billion, respectively.
The gaming division remained a cornerstone of the company’s operations, contributing 44.5 billion yuan ($6.1 billion) in combined revenue, which accounted for 30% of total quarterly earnings. Domestic gaming revenue remained flat at 31.8 billion yuan ($4.36 billion), while international gaming revenue saw a 19% year-over-year increase to 12.7 billion yuan ($1.74 billion). International growth was primarily driven by the strong performance of titles such as Valorant, Goddess of Victory: Nikke, and PUBG Mobile.
Looking ahead, the company anticipates a return to year-over-year growth for its domestic gaming segment in the third quarter, supported by recent launches like Valorant and Lost Ark in China, alongside established titles such as Naruto Mobile and Arena Breakout. Additionally, the WeChat Mini Games ecosystem continues to expand, boasting over 400 million monthly active users and supporting more than 300,000 developers. Over 100 of these casual titles generated gross revenue exceeding 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) during the second quarter, highlighting the increasing importance of the platform within the broader gaming portfolio.
