Only 1% of the surveyed board gamers identify solo play as their main preference. The majority of gamers, 63.5%, prefer playing in groups of 3–4.
This analysis explores the demographic profile and psychological motivations of solo board gamers, a niche segment within the broader tabletop gaming community. Utilizing data from over 100,000 respondents to the Board Game Motivation Profile survey, the study identifies that approximately 1% of board gamers express a specific preference for solo play. While the majority of the gaming population favors social settings involving three to four players, solo gamers represent a distinct subset that remains consistent across gender lines.
Key findings indicate that solo board gamers are significantly older than their multiplayer counterparts, a trend likely linked to the decline of social-oriented motivations—such as conflict, negotiation, and social fun—as players age. Contrary to the assumption that solo players might prefer shorter, more casual experiences, they demonstrate a strong interest in lengthy, complex game sessions. Their primary psychological drivers are immersion and aesthetics, reflecting a desire for rich themes, world-building, and high-quality components that facilitate a tangible, solitary experience.
The research highlights that preferred titles for this group, such as Mage Knight and various thematic card games, emphasize deep narrative roles and high production values. While the study focuses on those who explicitly prefer solo play, it acknowledges that many other gamers engage in solo sessions due to logistical constraints or lack of available opponents. By segmenting these motivations, the analysis provides a clearer understanding of the unique appeal of solo board gaming, distinguishing it from the social-centric nature of the wider hobby.
