Shift Up, a South Korean game developer, has reported strong commercial performance for its PlayStation 5 exclusive title, Stellar Blade. During a press conference held in June 2024 regarding its upcoming initial public offering, the company estimated that the game has surpassed 1 million units sold since its release on April 26, 2024. This performance has been characterized by management as a smooth launch for the new intellectual property, which has also achieved high user engagement scores and topped sales charts in major markets including the United States and the United Kingdom.
Financial data disclosed in the company’s stock report indicates that Stellar Blade generated ₩22 billion, or approximately $15.8 million, in royalty payments from Sony. This total is comprised of ₩6.3 billion ($4.5 million) earned in April and ₩15.7 billion ($11.3 million) in May. The studio intentionally excluded microtransactions from the game to bolster long-term brand value and appeal to a global audience.
The success of this title is strategically significant for Shift Up, which has faced scrutiny from financial authorities regarding its revenue concentration. Previously, the company’s financial stability was heavily reliant on a single product, Goddess of Victory: Nikke, which accounted for nearly 98% of total revenue in the prior year. Looking forward, the developer is evaluating a potential PC version of Stellar Blade to expand its reach and capitalize on the growing consumer base for AAA titles on that platform, though specific plans remain subject to existing contractual agreements with Sony.
