This represents a 4.2% year-over-year increase between April 2021 and March 2022. The puzzle genre remains the top-grossing category in the U.S. mobile market.
The mobile puzzle game sector in the United States experienced a period of stabilization between April 2021 and March 2022, with consumer spending reaching $5 billion. This represents a 4.2 percent year-over-year increase, a significant deceleration compared to the 33 percent growth observed in the preceding 12-month period. Despite the cooling revenue growth, the puzzle genre maintained its position as the top-grossing category in the U.S. mobile market.
Market data, derived from proprietary store intelligence and game taxonomy tools, indicates a notable decline in user acquisition volume. Total puzzle game installs fell by approximately 20 percent to 554 million, a trend attributed to the normalization of market activity following the pandemic-driven surge in 2020. While all subgenres experienced a decrease in downloads, the Classic Match 3 category remained the primary revenue driver, generating $1.6 billion. Conversely, the Other Match 3 subgenre emerged as the fastest-growing segment by revenue, posting a 101.3 percent year-over-year increase to $161 million.
Individual title performance highlights the continued dominance of established franchises alongside the success of newer entrants. Candy Crush Saga led the market in total revenue, while Project Makeover secured the highest number of downloads. Other notable developments include the rapid growth of Royal Match, which generated $208.4 million in its first year, and the sustained interest in the Merge subgenre, which saw a 5 percent revenue increase. Classic Match 3 games also demonstrated the highest efficiency, leading the industry with approximately $47 in revenue per install. These findings suggest that while the sector has moved past its peak pandemic-era expansion, it remains a highly competitive and lucrative space for publishers capable of driving innovation.
