The game was the fastest app to reach 50 million downloads and top-grossing status in U.S. App Store history.
Record-breaking. Pokémon GO set mobile industry records for downloads and top-grossing status.
This analysis examines user sentiment and feature requests for the mobile game Pokémon GO during its initial three-week launch period in the United States in July 2016. By leveraging sentiment analysis on over 81,000 App Store reviews, the research identifies key areas for potential product development and highlights the primary drivers of user dissatisfaction.
The data reveals that approximately 13 percent of all reviews, totaling 10,657 entries, contain specific feature requests. The most sought-after addition is the ability to engage in direct, real-time player-versus-player battles, cited in 372 reviews. Other significant requests include increasing the density of gyms and Pokéstops in specific locations, implementing a trading system for Pokémon, and expanding avatar customization options.
Regarding negative sentiment, the analysis shows a polarized user base, with 26 percent of reviewers assigning a one-star rating and 31 percent providing a five-star rating. The primary drivers of negative feedback are technical in nature, specifically citing server instability, frequent application crashes, and initial concerns regarding Google account privacy.
The findings suggest that while the game achieved record-breaking success in downloads and revenue, long-term engagement will likely depend on how developers address these technical hurdles and integrate the requested social and interactive features. With only a fraction of the planned functionality available at launch, the data underscores a clear demand for a more robust, feature-rich experience as the game matures.
