The research challenges the assumption that commercial engines democratize game development. Its focus is how international developers evaluate custom and commercial engines in Czech production.
This research examines the strategic implications of custom versus commercial game engine adoption within the Czech game development industry, specifically through the lens of international workers. The core thesis posits that while commercial engines are globally recognized for their technological prowess and appeal to international talent, their widespread adoption paradoxically creates local staffing challenges due to high global demand for these skills. Conversely, custom engines, despite often being perceived as technologically inferior and contributing to career stagnation for some developers, offer distinct advantages in the Czech context, particularly for established live service games, fostering strong community engagement and carving out content niches.
The study, based on longitudinal interviews with 28 foreign game developers in 10 Czech studios, reveals several critical findings. Developers working with custom engines frequently encounter outdated tools, performance issues, and a lack of programming support, prompting some to engage in personal projects using commercial engines to maintain relevant skills. However, these custom engines are noted for their ability to cultivate robust player and modder communities, especially in live service titles, though this may necessitate longer onboarding for senior developers.
Conversely, studios utilizing commercial engines, particularly Unreal, face significant challenges in attracting experienced talent, leading to understaffing. A notable mismatch exists where foreign workers often possess greater commercial engine proficiency than local leads, a situation exacerbated by Czechia's historical reliance on custom engines. This dynamic underscores a tension between local development traditions and global industry expectations, where custom engines, despite their perceived drawbacks, provide a competitive advantage within the local market, even as international workers express a preference for commercial tools to remain globally competitive. The scope of this analysis is focused on the Czech game development industry, examining current practices and their impact on international talent.
