Create free account[Music] thank you [Music] and now we have a little reel for you um about photon [Music] [Music] [Music]
thank you [Music] Donald Trump foreign [Music] so we have to update this reel because we're actually now at 700 000 developers we've passed that a week and a half ago um so let's start with the the track that I'm gonna present to you so the slide's gonna come up in a minute so it's a presentation that has a lot of content I'm gonna ask you to participate as well uh with me uh into some parts so that you get the point about what I'm gonna explain to you
so let's wait a bit so there we go so we're going to talk about physic multiplayer at the top of the charts uh so first like for I'm gonna explain a little bit more about Photon so um I'm clicking on it yeah yeah but it it doesn't go far I'm really really clicking and I like I'm on it sorry clicker doesn't work guys that's what happened oh there we go thank you so much wrong clicker thank you sir so okay so for those who don't know photons who it's been more than a decade that we're making multiplayer Services uh we have more than 4 000 Studios and currently over 1.3 billion model active users um and um and it's still growing strong uh but right now I'm going to stop talking right away about Photon and go straight about what I want to talk to you about today why physic is extremely
important and the success in physics in the games just to prove you how physic is important and then and then multiplayer mobile visit which is extremely hard to do and how you can do it as well so first like we my suggestion to everyone to understand well the subject is to go into Neuroscience so the brain is the template for all the interaction that you're going to have with your players inside of our brain there's the pre-motor cortex which is in the middle of our brain that's been there for millions of years but it's only in the past 150 000 years that our prefrontal cortex developed so in the pre-photo cortex you have the executive function of the brain and what does it do essentially is more or less analyze the context of the things that is happening around and taking a lot less energy for the brain to be able to execute functions and after that apply what you're feeling receiving and what
is happening with other humans around you also is all part of that region so our as a gaming developer it's a it's it's something that you have to um I would suggest to research so that you can have many pathways to be able to talk with your players in a way that is very intuitive so um so here we're about to talk about physics so physics is the same region in the prefrontal cortex and that is also where 70 75 of the dopamine comings is coming from so this is a place where you have to investigate and really get um get the key to success so we're gonna do a little experience everyone together so there's a stack of blocks here and you have to predict where the blocks are going to fall either on the green side on the red side so think about it in your head in your head would it fall more on the red or the green that's right so so the to the blocks fell on the red side so your
brain did that without you know any more context than what we're seeing now so let's do it one more time will the blocks fall more on the green or the red side there we go and then this time I want you to say if it's green or red that you think where the blocks are gonna fall should we do it one more time so tell me will it be green or red red green as well all right so it went on the red side so what happened here is that your brain without any more information was about to predict where things are gonna go because physic is actually part of your neural system and is Extreme extremely easy to understand for anyone in this room what happened as well on the last part when I ask you is it green or red the prefrontal context again was engaged
where you collaborate with the people around you and if you had it or if you don't this will create dopamine as well so it's a beautiful thing to engage so um the mathematic formula is at the bottom right which is the happiness formula formula is a real formula it's been proved by multiple University about how to engage with the very simple predictive system and how to get to that moment where you have this haha I nailed it I'm able to do it as well I'm seeing others doing something I can do it as well it's very engaging that's why multiplayer is strong because with calibration side that's why physic is strong because our brain sees what's going to happen without any single explanation so let's go on the success of games that are using physics so there's a game that comes from Helsinki it's um very old it was in the Java days well sorry that's that's actually the
wrong slide but it's really fine so anyway so that's uh the trial game right so trial was made by redlinks that's what started the studio and after that there was 16 more games based onto this uh physic principles obviously we saw multiple games that grew out of physics and um and if we look at like in 2009 the same game with a much much uh deeper into the connection with physics more rendering red links got eventually acquired by Ubisoft and and and again it's all about like interaction and physics that is moving around and um then we for some players here might know what is this that's the gravity gun which is hundred percent based on physics and uh so the gravity gone extremely important was a big innovation uh by the valve team and that made the game Groove like a very very strongly and then there's this game that obviously you know as well which is
entirely based on physic anyone can understand what's going on and what to do very simple to understand worry about that there we go Angry Birds and then if we go a bit further into how games evolve in physics we have full Evolution where the old Maps gonna change based on two direction of the players what you do and the physical aspects of the game and the gameplay is impacted right away so if we go even deeper and if we look on mobile today like physics is exploited at mini flavor but on console on PC on mobile because it is actually very easy to understand there's a wow factor attached to it so definitely you need to investigate physics so um but as I said earlier multiplayer mobile physics is extremely hard to do so outside Photon what we've developed is
um an engine that we call Quantum which is a deterministic system it has their own physics integrated into it it's 100 Network so you don't have to think about the multiplayer side of things it makes your life much more easier so what we've done through the years is build tons of samples that makes it easy for everyone to understand how to use these engines and also for you to create your own gameplay on top of them and have amazing games afterwards so one of these samples is um what we used to call the Battle Brawlers sorry it's coming there we go so it was very simple it's um it's a simple like you go from point A to B there's moving platforms and uh we were like well this is this is pretty fun how about we take the sample and and make a better game out of it so we're like okay let's find a studio that can do that for us and it was a studio for Meer kitka games that you probably know so um kitka games took more simple make it look very
nice and then launch the game and that end up being stumble guys so uh stumble guys for us was just you know we're just trying to do something and we launch it in the store not hoping anything it used the quantum multiplayer engine I was talking to you about earlier so essentially the goal of the game is to go from point A to B before anyone else and the good thing is that when you are in a multiplayer game that is physic is that it's extremely easy to understand what to do so first he can look around there's other players you look at those players and you're like well I'm just gonna follow what they're doing right so there's no onboarding in stumble guy so anyone can play today at any time and as you progress obviously you understand that there's obstacles you understand that you can jump around and eventually you're gonna get to the uh to the gold so what happens in stumble guys also is that when you finish you can start to look at the other players
so the video normally supposed to continue There oh that's unfortunate so um anyway so so there's other elements in the game obviously where collaboration is impacted meaning that when there's Platforms in the games where you have to move at a certain place all together as a group of players to be able to advance so the group of players have to go together at one area and then when they reach that area then eventually something else unlock so the collaboration effect is very much implemented in stumble guys as well um so what happened with Istanbul guys is that we also implemented a tournament system so this tournament system makes it possible for the streamers to create their own tournament and invite all of their of their viewers to participate in
that tournament so we had an organic effect that was tremendous and if we look at uh stumble guys today is actually more popular than Clash of Clans Candy Crush and whatnot and it's still growing very strong and as I said earlier all of this was not very much something that we were envisioning but it happens that it had the right ingredients for it to happen so and if we look on Twitch today you're gonna find hundreds of streamers streaming the games all the time sharing what they are doing and inviting others to participate with them so um the tournament system that we have anyone can use it it comes with a CMS as well so that you can create yourself the tournaments but you can give the keys as well to the streamers so that they can enjoy uh uh adding this crowd effect happening with them um if we look at the data of Summer guys it's incredible so first there's tournaments happening all the
time the onboarding is easy so now it's number one game in more than 30 countries and download it's in the top 100 grossing um the game got acquired by scopely about a month ago and this is all coming from the sample I was talking to you earlier the answers start with really strong Foundation it's more about gameplay and reusability as a player and how to grow that game so um if we go a little bit deeper regarding like the the retention of the tournament system so the the blue line is the players that participate in tournaments versus The Gray Line those who don't so the D1 retention is crazy right so it's um you know like you don't see many times games that reach that level of retention especially if you go to D30 which it's almost like 10 of the players that stays on such a large amount of downloads that is happening every day so it's something I I encourage you to
to look at as well um so to help developers to get into Quantum but also a new other engine which is a photon Fusion we are currently as we speak there's a global game Jam for the multiplayer game Jam so it's a month-long game Jam where currently we have 761 Studios something like that is participating and and then there's prices at the end there's a pre-fault on subscription we also have like the gaming circles for helping you in your sport and um and uh and and yeah so they were stoked to see all these games beginning produced uh by all the developers around the world uh some large studios are participating uh Indies are participating as well uh so if you want to learn more about multiplayer in an easy Factor well I encourage you to participate as well um so that was a very fast way to talk
about physics um I'm sorry about there's a part where the video was positive it was supposed to last a little bit longer but it doesn't matter um the video will be online for you to look at as well with my commentary so I think it's the first time I have time for a q a which is great so if you have any question related to either how to implement physics how to improve collaboration in your game be more than happy to answer your question uh otherwise we're gonna move forward thank you so much all right anyone got question raise your hand you guys are shy it's a pleasure so um you have to stay so we have uh next uh presentation starting very soon and after that we have a panel uh with Studios from here
from Helsinki about their Endeavor regarding multiplayer there's a lot to learn uh it's a subject as I was saying that is for many and something that is new if I look at currently at the trends it's more or less where you have to put your focus on and um and hopefully you're gonna have a good track so thank you so much for being here
Physics-based gameplay serves as a powerful tool for game developers to drive player engagement and retention by leveraging intuitive, brain-based predictive systems. Because the human prefrontal cortex is hardwired to process and predict physical interactions, games that utilize physics mechanics—such as Angry Birds, Trials, and Half-Life 2—benefit from a natural "wow factor" that requires minimal onboarding. This neurological alignment creates dopamine-rich experiences, as players derive satisfaction from successfully predicting and executing physical movements within a virtual environment.
The integration of multiplayer functionality with physics presents significant technical challenges, particularly on mobile platforms. To address this, deterministic networking engines like Quantum have been developed to streamline the synchronization of physics across distributed clients. A primary case study for this approach is Stumble Guys, which originated from a simple physics-based prototype. By utilizing a deterministic engine, the developers created a low-friction experience where players intuitively understand gameplay objectives by observing others, effectively eliminating the need for traditional tutorials.
The success of Stumble Guys further highlights the importance of social collaboration and community-driven features. The implementation of a tournament system allowed streamers to host events, fostering an organic growth loop that propelled the game to top-chart status in over 30 countries. Data indicates that players participating in these tournaments exhibit significantly higher retention rates, with D30 retention reaching approximately 10% among that cohort. Ultimately, the combination of accessible physics-based mechanics, seamless multiplayer synchronization, and community-focused tournament tools provides a robust framework for scaling mobile titles to massive global audiences.
