At least 2,027 professionals lost their jobs in February 2024. This is a significant increase from the 386 layoffs recorded in February 2023.
The global video game industry experienced a significant surge in workforce reductions during February 2024, with at least 2,027 professionals losing their jobs. This figure represents a fivefold increase compared to the 386 layoffs recorded in February 2023. These findings, derived from data tracked by the Game Industry Layoffs project, highlight a deepening trend of instability within the sector, as the total number of industry layoffs for the first two months of 2024 has already surpassed 8,000.
Major industry players were responsible for the bulk of these reductions. Sony Interactive Entertainment led the month with 900 job cuts, which included the closure of London Studio and staff reductions at Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, and Guerrilla Games. Electronic Arts followed with 670 layoffs, marking its second round of cuts within a twelve-month period. Other notable companies implementing staff reductions included Wildlife Studios, Supermassive Games, and Hidden Path Entertainment, alongside various smaller studios and developers.
The actual impact of these layoffs is likely higher than the reported figures, as many organizations do not publicly disclose the full extent of their restructuring efforts. When combined with the nearly 6,000 layoffs recorded in January 2024—driven by major cuts at Microsoft, Unity, and Riot Games—the industry is on a trajectory to potentially exceed the 10,500 total layoffs documented throughout the entirety of 2023. This sustained period of contraction reflects widespread organizational restructuring and project cancellations across the global gaming landscape.
