This represents a 15% year-over-year growth compared to 2017. The figures are based on worldwide player spending across the App Store and Google Play.
Nintendo’s mobile gaming division experienced significant growth in 2018, generating a total of $348 million in worldwide player spending across the App Store and Google Play. This figure represents a 15 percent increase over the previous year, with a particularly strong fourth-quarter performance of $117 million, marking a 47 percent year-over-year rise. These findings are based on Store Intelligence data, which tracks revenue across the publisher's portfolio of four mobile titles.
The primary driver of this financial success was Fire Emblem Heroes, which accounted for approximately 66 percent of the company's total annual mobile revenue, contributing over $230 million. The newer title, Dragalia Lost, also made a substantial impact, generating $58.4 million in its first few months despite limited geographic availability. In contrast, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Super Mario Run saw declining performance, with the latter’s annual revenue dropping to just over $10 million compared to $31 million in 2017.
The data highlights a shift in Nintendo’s mobile strategy, moving away from the premium, one-time purchase model utilized by Super Mario Run toward traditional in-app microtransactions. This transition is expected to continue with future releases, such as the anticipated launch of Mario Kart Tour. While Fire Emblem Heroes remains the dominant revenue anchor across 40 global territories, the performance of newer titles suggests that Nintendo is successfully leveraging its intellectual property to capture consistent, long-term mobile engagement.
