The German video game market demonstrates a strong consumer appetite for premium products, with collector’s and special editions serving as a significant revenue driver. Research indicates that 28 percent of gamers in Germany—approximately 9.7 million individuals—have purchased such editions. Among this group, 10 percent of all players, or 3.3 million people, are frequent or regular buyers of these high-value packages. This trend highlights a willingness among dedicated fans to pay a premium for products that deepen their connection to specific game worlds, contrasting with declining consumer spending in other entertainment sectors like music and film.
The findings, based on a representative survey of 2,026 German-speaking internet users aged 14 and older conducted by GfK, identify the specific features that drive these purchasing decisions. Additional in-game content, such as bonus levels, missions, or exclusive equipment, is the primary motivator for 29 percent of gamers. Other influential factors include limited-edition exclusivity (18 percent), physical collectibles like action figures (17 percent), soundtracks (15 percent), art books (11 percent), and elaborate packaging (11 percent).
The data suggests that the market for physical collector’s editions has experienced positive development in recent years. By offering tangible and digital value-adds, publishers successfully incentivize consumers to invest beyond the standard price point of a game. These insights underscore the importance of premium physical offerings in the German market, where emotional engagement with game franchises translates directly into higher per-user spending.
