The research presents a novel motion editing technique designed to enhance the diversity and naturalness of non-player character (NPC) animations in 3D games. By addressing the common industry limitation where NPCs rely on simplified, repetitive movements, the study introduces a procedural approach that utilizes Perlin noise functions to synthesize varied yet stylistically consistent motions. The primary thesis is that motion signals can be decomposed into hierarchical noise patterns, which, when manipulated, allow for the generation of multiple, natural-looking variations from a single base animation.
The methodology involves extracting representative frequencies from motion signals using the discrete Fourier transform and statistical stability analysis. To achieve high-fidelity approximations, the system employs an iterative noise extraction algorithm that constructs a "noise pyramid," where multiple octaves of noise are layered to capture complex motion characteristics. The optimization of these signals is performed using sequential equality constrained quadratic programming. This approach allows for the creation of crowd simulations and motion analogies, such as applying a "drunken" gait style to a standard dancing animation, while maintaining the underlying structural integrity of the original movement.
The findings demonstrate that this noise-based framework is computationally efficient, making it suitable for real-time applications in 3D game environments. By adjusting parameters within the noise function, developers can control randomness at specific frequencies, thereby producing diverse NPC behaviors without requiring extensive manual animation. While the technique successfully automates motion variety, the authors acknowledge that the reliance on inherent randomness can limit precise user control over fine motion details. Future development aims to integrate a more intuitive user interface to bridge this gap between procedural generation and artistic intent.
