The game achieved approximately 329 million unique installs globally.
The mobile gaming landscape for Pokémon GO during its first year of release demonstrates a significant disparity in monetization efficiency across global markets. While the United States led the world in total gross revenue with approximately $424 million in in-app purchases, Japan emerged as the clear leader in per-download monetization. Japanese players spent an average of $26 per download, a figure more than three times higher than the $7.70 average observed in the United States.
Data derived from Store Intelligence metrics covering the game’s first 12 months highlights that high-spending behavior in Japan is particularly pronounced for this title. Following the United States and Canada, which averaged $7.70 and $7.60 per download respectively, other major markets such as Australia and Great Britain trailed with averages of $6.20 and $5.00. France recorded the lowest average among the top ten revenue-generating countries at $2.80 per download, representing a nine-fold difference compared to the Japanese market.
These findings underscore the unique strength of the Japanese mobile gaming sector, where players consistently demonstrate higher spending tendencies than their international counterparts. By the end of its first year, Pokémon GO had achieved nearly $1.2 billion in total worldwide revenue across approximately 329 million unique installs. This analysis confirms that while total market size remains a critical factor for gross revenue, the intensity of player engagement and monetization per user varies drastically by region, with Japan setting a distinct benchmark for the industry.
