Sony’s fiscal year 2023 financial results highlight a period of significant growth for its Game & Network Services segment, which generated ¥4.26 trillion ($27.2 billion) in revenue, a 17% year-over-year increase. Operating income for the division rose 16% to ¥290.2 billion ($1.85 billion). This performance was primarily driven by strong third-party software sales and favorable foreign exchange rates, despite challenges including increased hardware losses and a decline in first-party game sales.
A central highlight of the fiscal year was the commercial success of Helldivers 2, which achieved 12 million units sold globally within its first 12 weeks. This milestone establishes the title as the fastest-selling game in PlayStation history, surpassing the previous record held by God of War Ragnarök. Despite this success, the game has faced significant controversy regarding mandatory PlayStation Network account linking for PC users, leading to its removal from sale in numerous countries and widespread community backlash.
Hardware performance remained a point of concern, as PlayStation 5 console sales reached 20.8 million units for the fiscal year. This figure fell short of the company’s revised target of 21 million units and significantly trailed initial expectations of 25 million. Total lifetime sales for the console reached 59.2 million units as of March 31, 2024. Additionally, the PlayStation Network reported 118 million monthly active users, reflecting a 10 million user increase over the previous year, even as the digital share of total game sales rose to 70%.
