Create free accountso here we are in san francisco it's still not really not really sunny later on today anyway gdc first first uh meeting we've had is with uh with half brick so uh showing us a really cool game you want to introduce yourself tell us a bit about your really cool game great so yeah my name is luke muscat i'm the chief creative officer at patrick studios and i've just been showing a fish out of water okay so fish out of water is our new game that we've got coming out and it's probably not what people are going to be expecting from half brick this time but that's cool that's what we like to do is do something new and interesting each time so fish out of water is basically the best stone skipping game around it's basically where you want to it's similar to skipping stones where you want to throw fish across the water instead of these stones but they seem to like it they're kind of like yeah like cuddly characters that's right there's a little there's a little bit of a story there that you can unlock about these fish that are kind of they're these kind of like rebellious sort of um little group that yeah they're kind of thrill
seekers i guess and you know they really like skipping across the water and yeah it's been a really really interesting game to work on a really big aspect of it is the weather system so every hour when you go on the weather will change sometimes it'll be raining storming sometimes it'll be perfectly flat and that'll change the way that you play the game each time and uh and there's there's five five characters you start off with six characters and you get three throws that's right so you throw you get to choose half the characters to throw so what yes what's the key behind that because obviously most things you go on you've got six characters you choose one and throw that out yeah so how have you you've got this kind of average kind of averaging system that's right yeah you really need to get there's five judges at the end and each of the judges sort of have different criteria so one of the judges doesn't really care about how many skips you get they just care about distance and then the other judges sort of you know just care about skips and non-distance some of them worry about the weather they all have these different personalities so you have to depending on the weather depending on the conditions select
different fish and you know try different strategies and you know muck around with which fish you're going to use and how you're going to boost and it's really interesting because it's not like a clear formula on how to get a high score it's not like jetpack where it's just to go further you really need to kind of experiment around and play around with it and figure out how to get a high score well imagine we expect you to play fish out of water it will be out on april 18th on what platforms uh on ios actually and it'll be universal as well cool thank you no worries thanks
Fish Out Of Water represents a departure from the established design philosophy at Halfbrick Studios, moving away from traditional endless-runner mechanics toward a physics-based stone-skipping concept. The game centers on a group of rebellious, thrill-seeking fish characters that players launch across a water surface. By emphasizing experimentation over a singular path to success, the design encourages players to adapt their strategies based on shifting environmental variables and specific scoring criteria.
The core gameplay loop involves selecting three fish from a roster of six to perform a series of throws. Success is determined by a panel of five judges, each possessing unique personalities and distinct scoring priorities, such as total distance, skip count, or responsiveness to current weather conditions. A dynamic weather system, which updates hourly, significantly alters the water surface and gameplay physics, ensuring that no two sessions offer identical challenges. This system forces players to constantly re-evaluate their character choices and boosting techniques to maximize their scores.
Scheduled for a universal iOS release on April 18, the title aims to provide a fresh, accessible experience that contrasts with the studio’s previous high-intensity hits. By balancing character-specific traits with unpredictable environmental factors, the game seeks to foster a deeper level of strategic engagement than typical casual titles, requiring players to master the nuances of each fish to satisfy the varied demands of the judging panel.
