The growth highlights a significant expansion in the mobile market.
Global consumer spending on mobile applications reached nearly $32 billion in the first quarter of 2021, representing a 31 percent year-over-year increase. This growth, driven by the sustained impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on digital habits, highlights a significant expansion in the mobile market. The data, derived from preliminary Store Intelligence estimates, covers worldwide performance across Apple’s App Store and Google Play, focusing on in-app purchases, premium apps, and subscriptions.
Revenue growth was robust across both major platforms. Apple’s App Store generated $20.4 billion, a 28 percent increase, while Google Play saw a 36 percent rise to $11.4 billion. Although the App Store continues to command higher total spending, the revenue gap between the two platforms narrowed compared to the previous year. Total first-time app installs also rose by 9 percent, reaching 36.7 billion. While Google Play experienced a 15 percent increase in downloads, the App Store saw an 8 percent decline, largely attributed to the normalization of the Chinese market following an exceptionally high volume of installs during the onset of the pandemic in early 2020.
The mobile gaming sector contributed $22.2 billion to the total revenue, marking a 25 percent year-over-year increase. Top-earning titles included PUBG Mobile, Honor of Kings, and Genshin Impact. While game downloads grew by 5 percent globally to 14.1 billion, the App Store recorded a 23 percent decline in game installs, mirroring the broader trend in non-game app downloads. Despite the potential for shifting consumer behavior as in-person activities resume, the findings suggest that the pandemic has permanently elevated the mobile ecosystem's baseline performance.
