The game quickly achieved significant commercial success.
The mobile role-playing game Genshin Impact, developed by miHoYo, achieved significant commercial success during its launch week, generating approximately $60 million in global player spending between September 28 and October 4, 2020. This performance established the title as the second-highest grossing mobile game worldwide for the period, trailing only Honor of Kings and surpassing other major titles such as PUBG Mobile. Within the RPG genre, it secured the top global revenue position, outperforming established competitors like Monster Strike and Fate/Grand Order.
The game’s financial performance demonstrates a strong international reach, with 58 percent of its launch-week revenue originating from markets outside of China. While China remained the leading market, contributing roughly 42 percent of total revenue, Japan and the United States followed as the second and third largest markets, respectively. Platform-wise, the Apple App Store accounted for 70 percent of total spending, while Google Play contributed the remaining 30 percent.
These findings are based on Store Intelligence data, which tracks consumer spending across global mobile storefronts. The success of the launch highlights a shifting landscape in the mobile gaming industry, characterized by the increasing global influence of Chinese publishers and a growing consumer appetite for expansive, console-quality experiences on mobile devices. By achieving high-ranking revenue status simultaneously in domestic and international markets, the title serves as a notable example of a universally successful mobile release.
