The Esports Advocate
This initiative aims to connect Black college students with professionals in the gaming industry.
Gen.G Esports, in collaboration with the Black Collegiate Gaming Association (BCGA) and McDonald’s, launched the HBCU+ College netWORK Summit to foster professional development for Black college students interested in the gaming and esports industries. The initiative serves as an expansion of the inaugural 2022 HBCU NetWORK Conference, aiming to bridge the gap between students and industry leaders through mentorship, networking, and educational panels.
The summit, held across Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and the Eastern Shore, features a series of mixers and panels where students can engage in candid discussions with established professionals. Key topics include navigating workplace toxicity and identifying emerging industry trends. Notable speakers include representatives from Wicked Saints Studios and Skydance Interactive, alongside various gaming personalities. To further incentivize participation, the event includes an NBA 2K tournament for 16 student competitors, featuring a $1,000 USD prize pool and broadcast coverage on the Gen.G Twitch channel.
This partnership aligns with Gen.G’s broader commitment to collegiate esports, which includes a 10-year, $1 million investment via the Gen.G Foundation to support future industry leaders. By facilitating direct access to entrepreneurs and executives, the organizers seek to provide a tangible pathway for students to enter the competitive gaming workforce. This effort reflects a growing trend of corporate-backed initiatives designed to professionalize the collegiate esports landscape and improve diversity within the sector.
