They raised $144 million through a two-week Fortnite fundraiser. This single initiative drove the vast majority of the funding.
The global games industry has demonstrated significant financial support for humanitarian relief in Ukraine, with total contributions reaching approximately $195.3 million as of April 2022. This collective effort involved numerous developers and publishers, though the vast majority of the funding was driven by a single, large-scale initiative. Epic Games, in collaboration with Microsoft, accounted for 73% of the total industry contribution, raising $144 million through a two-week Fortnite fundraiser. Other notable contributors included Humble Bundle with $20.7 million, Necrosoft with $6.3 million, and Riot Games with $5.4 million, alongside various other industry entities such as Sony, Embracer Group, and Supercell.
Beyond direct financial aid, the industry has faced ongoing geopolitical tensions regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, specifically concerning the release of the game Atomic Heart. In February 2023, the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine formally requested that major digital storefronts, including Valve, Sony, and Microsoft, ban the sale of the title within the country. The Ministry cited concerns regarding the developer’s potential ties to sanctioned Russian entities, the risk of user data collection, and the possibility that revenue from the game could indirectly support the Russian war effort. Despite these calls for a boycott and the associated controversy, the game achieved strong commercial performance at launch, peaking at over 38,000 concurrent players on Steam. These developments highlight the complex intersection of global game distribution, corporate social responsibility, and the geopolitical pressures facing the industry in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine.
