This £30 million government-backed initiative was launched in June 2025 to bolster the UK video games industry.
The Games Growth Package, a £30 million government-backed initiative launched in June 2025, has significantly altered the funding and support landscape for the United Kingdom’s video games industry. Designed to bolster the sector as part of the broader Creative Industries Sector Plan, the program provides targeted financial resources to early-stage studios, facilitates international expansion, and establishes formal channels for industry-government dialogue through the newly created Video Games Council.
Key findings from the first year of implementation highlight strong demand for these financial instruments. The UK Games Fund has seen high uptake across its three primary funding tracks, which offer grants ranging from £20,000 for startups to £250,000 for scaling developers. Simultaneously, the UK Global Screen Fund, which saw its annual budget increase to over £18 million for the 2026–2029 period, has supported 32 companies with £3.2 million in grants specifically aimed at international business development and export activities.
The initiative also revitalized the London Games Festival, which in 2026 attracted over 100,000 visitors from 61 countries and generated an estimated business pipeline of nearly £30 million. With over 8,000 business delegates in attendance, the festival has solidified its role as a critical hub for international investment. While industry leaders acknowledge that these measures have placed the UK games sector on its strongest footing in years, they emphasize that sustained government support is essential to maintain this momentum and ensure the UK remains a global leader in game development rather than merely a competitive participant.
