The global video game industry experienced a significant surge in workforce reductions during September 2024, with at least 1,009 professionals losing their jobs. This figure represents the highest monthly total since April 2024, underscoring ongoing instability within the sector. These findings are derived from data tracked by the Game Industry Layoffs project, which monitors public disclosures and industry reports to quantify employment trends.
The month was characterized by several high-profile staff reductions. Microsoft led the industry with 650 layoffs affecting teams associated with Warcraft Rumble and Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile. Other notable cuts included 139 positions at Lost Boys Interactive, 90 at Tilting Point, and the closure of Midwinter Entertainment by Behaviour Interactive, which resulted in approximately 35 job losses. Neon Machine also reduced its workforce by 35 employees.
These September figures contribute to a broader, concerning trend for the 2024 calendar year. Total industry layoffs have reached nearly 13,000 to date, already surpassing the 10,500 total recorded throughout the entirety of 2023. Major contributors to this year’s cumulative total include significant restructuring efforts at Microsoft, Unity, and Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The actual scale of industry contraction is likely higher than reported figures suggest, as many companies do not publicly disclose specific headcount reductions. Furthermore, several studios, including Midnight Society, Ouka Studios, Ballistic Moon, and Merge Games, implemented layoffs during the period without providing precise data. The persistent nature of these cuts reflects a challenging economic environment for global game development and publishing.
