Pervasive gaming serves as a potent mechanism for fostering behavioral change, as evidenced by the influence of Pokémon GO on player routines and social dynamics. By integrating core game mechanics with real-world physical locations, the application successfully encourages increased physical activity, improved routine meaningfulness, and enhanced social interaction among its user base. These behavioral shifts are primarily driven by thirteen specific game features, with the act of capturing new creatures and the necessity of navigating physical environments emerging as the most significant catalysts for both intentional and unintentional lifestyle adjustments.
The research, which utilizes a critical incident technique involving 262 participants, demonstrates that the effectiveness of these games relies heavily on the alignment between thematic identity and daily activities. When game mechanics are seamlessly woven into the fabric of a player's routine, they act as a sustainable support system for self-improvement and social engagement. The findings suggest that pervasive games possess a unique capacity to influence human behavior by transforming mundane environments into interactive, goal-oriented spaces that incentivize movement and community connection.
Despite these positive outcomes, the study highlights critical limitations regarding accessibility and geographic equity. The reliance on physical location as a primary driver of gameplay creates disparities for individuals residing outside of dense urban centers, where the density of game-relevant landmarks is significantly lower. Consequently, while pervasive games offer a scalable model for behavior change support systems, their efficacy remains tethered to the infrastructure of the physical world. Future developments in this field must address these geographic inequities to ensure that the benefits of gamified behavior modification are accessible to a broader, more diverse population.
