A novel psychographic-behavioral mapping method provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing player engagement and constraint negotiation within location-based augmented reality exergames. By integrating behavioral descriptors, such as player status and self-identification, with psychographic domains including loyalty, involvement, and structural constraints, this approach clarifies the complex motivations driving long-term participation in titles like Pokémon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. The primary objective is to equip game designers and health practitioners with a scalable tool to foster sustained physical activity through more effective, tailored game experiences.
Analysis of survey data from 1,052 participants reveals that while players frequently encounter significant structural, intrapersonal, and interpersonal barriers, these obstacles are often mitigated by high levels of involvement. Emotional attachment, symbolic value, and brand loyalty function as critical enablers that sustain engagement despite external challenges. The research demonstrates that when players possess a strong psychological connection to the game, they are more likely to persist, thereby maximizing the potential for the intended health and fitness benefits associated with serious exergames.
Beyond player retention, the findings underscore the necessity for industry-wide improvements in game design and ethical oversight. Designers are encouraged to prioritize strategies that cultivate deep user involvement to counteract the risk of player defection. Furthermore, the study highlights an emerging industry requirement for external regulation concerning free-to-play monetization models, which may influence the sustainability of these digital health interventions. Ultimately, this mapping method offers a robust foundation for developing future serious games that successfully balance commercial engagement with long-term public health objectives.
