This analysis investigates the evolving landscape of digital games by identifying the criteria that distinguish traditional core titles from more experimental, avant-garde works. Utilizing grounded theory, the study examines over 150 professional critic reviews of 14 diverse games to determine how gameplay experiences are articulated and valued. The research posits that games can be categorized by the primary type of challenge they present to the player, specifically identifying a dichotomy between functional and emotional challenges.
Functional challenge, characteristic of traditional triple-A titles, centers on the mastery of mechanics, dexterity, and strategic skill to overcome environmental or artificial intelligence obstacles. In these games, reviewers prioritize technical performance, the quantity of content, and the sense of power afforded to the player. Conversely, avant-garde titles emphasize emotional challenge, where the primary engagement is cognitive and reflective. These games often utilize ambiguity, solitude, and narrative depth to elicit personal, varied emotional responses, frequently de-emphasizing mechanical complexity and replayability in favor of intense, novel experiences.
The findings suggest that these two modes of challenge are largely antagonistic, as high-intensity functional demands can distract from the contemplative space required for deep emotional investment. While core games rely on established tropes of action and triumph, avant-garde titles leverage artistic devices to foster a more profound, subjective connection with the player. Ultimately, the study concludes that the functional-emotional spectrum provides a valuable framework for understanding the diverse ways games engage players, offering a path for future design and critical analysis as the medium continues to mature as an art form.
