An investor group led by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed the acquisition.
Electronic Arts has undergone a significant corporate transformation, transitioning from a publicly traded entity to a private company following a $55 billion acquisition. This leveraged buyout, finalized in August 2026, represents one of the largest transactions in gaming industry history. The acquisition was led by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), which now holds a 93.4% stake in the company, with the remainder held by Silver Lake (5.5%) and Affinity Partners (1.1%). The deal involved $20 billion in debt financing and resulted in the company’s delisting from the NASDAQ exchange after nearly four decades.
Prior to this acquisition, Electronic Arts demonstrated substantial financial success through its long-term licensing partnership with Disney for the Star Wars franchise. As of early 2021, the company reported over $3 billion in net bookings generated from its Star Wars portfolio. Key contributors to this performance included titles such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the Star Wars Battlefront series, with the mobile title Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes alone accounting for more than $1.2 billion in revenue.
Despite the expiration of its exclusive development rights and the subsequent entry of other studios into the Star Wars gaming space, Electronic Arts maintained a commitment to the franchise. Leadership previously emphasized that the company would continue to invest in the brand, focusing on consistent output and high-quality game development. Following the 2026 acquisition, the company’s strategic direction remains focused on leveraging its established intellectual property and scaling innovation under its new ownership structure to serve its global player base.
