The global games industry experienced a record-breaking year in 2022, characterized by a significant surge in both the volume and total value of financial transactions. Driven by high-profile acquisitions and robust private investment, the sector saw 1,320 deals announced or closed, representing a total value of $127 billion. This figure marks a 78.8% increase in total deal value compared to the previous year, underscoring a period of intense consolidation and capital infusion.
Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) served as the primary engine of this growth, accounting for $102.3 billion of the total value—a threefold increase over 2021. The PC and console segment emerged as the most active area for M&A, contributing 83 transactions valued at $74.9 billion. Notable high-value deals included Microsoft’s $68.9 billion bid for Activision Blizzard, Take-Two’s $12.7 billion acquisition of Zynga, and Sony’s $3.6 billion purchase of Bungie. Beyond M&A, the industry saw $13.5 billion in public placements and $11.1 billion in private funding, with Epic Games securing the largest private investment of the year at $2 billion.
Strategic activity was led by companies such as Embracer Group, which completed 20 deals, followed by Tencent, Animoca Brands, Keywords Studios, and Take-Two. While the industry reached historic highs in 2022, analysts anticipate that the consolidation trend will persist into 2023, albeit at a more moderate scale. Major players, including Sony, Microsoft, Netflix, and NetEase, are expected to remain active participants in the market as the industry continues to evolve.
