Parnell, the founder of the scholastic esports company, will remain on the board of directors and serve as a senior advisor during the transition.
Delane Parnell, the founder and CEO of the U.S.-based scholastic esports company PlayVS, has stepped down from his leadership position. Joe Gibson, who joined the organization in 2019 as comptroller and most recently served as Vice President of Finance, has been appointed as interim CEO. While Parnell will vacate his executive role to pursue new projects, he will remain on the company’s board of directors and continue to serve as a senior advisor during the transition period.
Parnell’s departure follows a tenure marked by both significant growth and persistent industry controversy. Throughout his leadership, PlayVS faced public criticism from various high school associations and non-profit organizations regarding its business practices. Specifically, critics alleged that the company leveraged its exclusive publishing licenses—secured from major entities like Riot Games and Nintendo—to force scholastic organizations into restrictive partnerships. A notable example occurred in March 2023, when the Illinois High School Association opted to remove NBA 2K from its state-wide competition series rather than comply with requirements mandated by PlayVS’s licensing agreements.
The transition comes after months of negotiation between Parnell and the board, which reportedly began in December 2022. Despite the controversies surrounding his management style and the company's exclusivity strategies, Parnell has been recognized for his contributions to the sector, including his 2019 inclusion in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. PlayVS is currently conducting a formal search for a permanent successor to lead the organization as it continues its operations within the scholastic esports market.
