This significant content expansion, which introduced a secondary game world, new characters, and a head-to-head competitive mode, successfully revitalized player engagement for the title, which was originally released in 2012.
Consumer spending in the United States reached more than $25.7 million across the Apple App Store and Google Play during the week of the update. This figure represents a 250 percent increase over the $7.3 million generated the previous week and surpasses the game’s previous record of $21.3 million, set in December 2015, by approximately 20 percent. The magnitude of this revenue spike is comparable to the launch-period performance of a new mobile title rather than a mature game.
These findings are based on Store Intelligence data covering U.S. app store performance from January 2014 through May 2017. The success of the Builder Base update highlights the efficacy of Supercell’s strategy to incorporate player feedback and deliver substantial, game-changing content to maintain long-term relevance in the competitive mobile gaming market. By effectively creating a game-within-a-game, the developer demonstrated that significant live-service updates can drive record-breaking financial results even years after a game's initial release.
