Supercell’s mobile strategy title, Clash of Clans, experienced a significant financial resurgence in 2019, generating $727 million in global revenue. This figure represents a 27 percent year-over-year increase from the $572 million earned in 2018, marking the game’s first annual revenue growth since 2015. The title remains a cornerstone of Supercell’s portfolio, accounting for 42 percent of the publisher's total revenue for the year and helping the company secure a position among the top five highest-grossing mobile game publishers globally.
The primary driver for this growth was the introduction of the Gold Pass in April 2019, a battle pass-style in-app purchase designed to supplement monthly season challenges. The impact of this feature was immediate, as player spending reached $66.6 million in its first month, reflecting a 58 percent month-over-month increase and a 73 percent year-over-year rise compared to April 2018. Following this implementation, the game generated $597 million between April and December 2019, a 32 percent increase over the $453 million earned during the same period in 2018.
These findings are based on data from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform, which tracks global mobile application performance. The analysis highlights the effectiveness of integrating battle pass mechanics into established mobile titles to drive engagement and monetization. By successfully adapting to evolving industry trends, the game demonstrated an ability to maintain relevance seven years after its initial release, effectively reversing a multi-year trend of declining annual revenue.
