The system combines a design-time storyboard interface with rule-based runtime automation.
Cine-AI functions as an open-source Unity toolset designed to automate the production of video game cutscenes by procedurally mimicking the distinct cinematography of renowned human directors. By integrating a design-time storyboard interface with rule-based runtime automation, the system enables developers to generate stylistically consistent sequences that remain responsive to dynamic game environments. This approach addresses the labor-intensive nature of manual cutscene creation, offering a scalable alternative that balances automated stylistic imitation with necessary creative oversight.
The system’s efficacy is rooted in a dataset of 160 annotated film clips from Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie, which isolates 15 specific cinematography techniques. A logistic regression model successfully differentiates between these directorial signatures with 83.75% accuracy, validating the underlying camera-management features. During empirical testing, viewers correctly identified the intended directorial style in 79% of generated sequences, significantly outperforming random chance. Furthermore, a usability assessment conducted with Unity professionals resulted in a System Usability Scale score of 74.36, placing the tool in the 70th percentile for professional utility.
While the current implementation demonstrates significant potential for both independent and professional game development, the research acknowledges limitations regarding computational efficiency, dataset diversity, and the fidelity of style imitation. Future iterations aim to refine these processes through the integration of Toric Space for improved camera positioning and the expansion of user-defined cinematography rules. Published in the October 2022 issue of PACM on Human-Computer Interaction, this work establishes a foundational framework for leveraging machine learning to bridge the gap between traditional film aesthetics and interactive digital storytelling.
