Predicting player engagement and retention in puzzle games often relies on costly human playtesting or extensive historical data.
Predicting player engagement and retention in puzzle games often relies on costly human playtesting or extensive historical data, which can delay development cycles. To address this, a novel simulation framework utilizes Deep Reinforcement Learning agents combined with population-level behavioral modeling to forecast per-level pass rates and churn. By simulating individual player attributes—specifically skill levels, persistence, and susceptibility to boredom—the model effectively captures how diverse player segments interact with game content. This approach allows developers to evaluate the impact of design decisions in silico, identifying problematic levels before they are deployed to a live audience.
The scope of this research focuses on the mobile puzzle genre, specifically utilizing Angry Birds Dream Blast as the primary case study. By integrating AI-driven gameplay data with computational models of human psychology, the system provides a scalable alternative to traditional data collection methods. The findings indicate that this extended model significantly outperforms baseline regression and AI-only prediction methods, offering a more nuanced understanding of how player populations evolve as they progress through increasingly difficult content.
Ultimately, this methodology provides a computationally efficient tool for game designers to optimize difficulty curves and maximize retention. By eliminating the immediate need for extensive human gameplay data, the framework enables rapid iteration and proactive balancing. The ability to accurately predict churn and pass rates through simulation represents a substantial advancement in game analytics, providing a robust, data-driven foundation for balancing complex puzzle mechanics and maintaining long-term player engagement.
