Aggressively fine-tuned Small Language Models (SLMs) organized into agentic networks offer a practical, cost-effective alternative to cloud-based large language models for generating dynamic, context-aware game content. By constraining models to narrow, well-defined tasks and employing a retry-until-success strategy, developers can achieve high-quality, coherent narrative output that adheres to the strict memory and latency constraints of real-time game engines. This approach shifts the paradigm from massive, generalized models toward specialized, locally deployed agents capable of maintaining narrative consistency within complex RPG environments.
The development of DefameLM, a model based on Llama 3.2-1B, serves as a proof of concept for this methodology. By utilizing a directed acyclic graph pipeline to generate training data, researchers successfully fine-tuned the model to produce lore-consistent smear campaigns. Benchmarking across various quantization levels reveals that 8-bit quantized models provide the optimal balance between narrative reliability and computational efficiency. While 16-bit models offer slightly higher success rates, the 8-bit configuration maintains a 93 percent success rate while fitting comfortably within the memory footprint required for consumer hardware deployment.
Although 4-bit models offer superior generation speeds, they exhibit a notable decline in performance and distinct failure modes when processing complex prompts. Consequently, the 8-bit model stands as the most robust solution for integrating player-driven narratives into game systems. While human creative direction remains a fundamental requirement for system design and data curation, this framework provides a scalable foundation for developers to implement dynamic, open-context narratives without the latency or privacy concerns associated with cloud-based infrastructure. This research confirms that specialized SLMs are a viable, high-performance solution for the next generation of interactive game content.
