This open-ended environment improves visual-spatial intelligence. It also helps children manage challenges related to social interaction and repetitive behavior.
This analysis explores the role of unit block play as a therapeutic and developmental tool for children, with a specific focus on improving visual-spatial intelligence in children with autism. The central thesis posits that because unit blocks lack rigid rules or predetermined patterns, they provide an open-ended environment that encourages creative expression, reduces stress, and fosters cognitive growth. By allowing children to manipulate shapes, colors, and dimensions, these toys serve as a form of vision therapy that helps children with autism overcome challenges related to social interaction, communication, and repetitive behavior.
The study utilizes a qualitative methodology, employing observation, interviews, and documentation to assess how construction toys influence early childhood cognitive development. The findings indicate that engaging with unit blocks stimulates fine motor skills, mathematical understanding, and emotional intelligence. By enabling children to visualize and recreate their surroundings, the blocks help bridge the gap between internal imagination and external expression. The research emphasizes that the absence of strict structural requirements allows children to feel a sense of agency, which is critical for building confidence and reducing the anxiety often associated with neurodevelopmental disorders.
The scope of the research is situated within the Indonesian context, aligning with national educational initiatives that promote learning through play. The analysis concludes that the effectiveness of this approach relies heavily on the consistent involvement of parents and caregivers. When integrated into a supportive environment, unit block play functions as a sustainable, accessible, and highly effective medium for enhancing the visual-spatial capabilities and overall social-emotional development of children with autism.
