HyperGryph, developer of Arknights, is the chief sponsor of the World Team League (WTL), China’s only StarCraft II tournament.
Shanghai-based game developer HyperGryph, creator of the mobile title Arknights, has entered into a sponsorship agreement with the World Team League (WTL), China’s only remaining StarCraft II tournament. This partnership marks a notable shift in industry norms, as it represents the first instance of a game developer sponsoring an esports tournament for a title owned by a different publisher.
The financial commitment includes a direct contribution of ¥46,600 ($68,000 USD) toward the tournament's prize money. The total prize pool for the WTL circuit is confirmed to exceed ¥2 million ($291,000 USD). This investment provides critical support for the Chinese StarCraft II community, which has faced significant instability following the closure of the game's official Chinese servers after the dissolution of the partnership between NetEase and Activision Blizzard.
The sponsorship arrives during a period of renewed interest in the local StarCraft II scene, bolstered by the recent success of Chinese player Li “Oliveira” Peinan, who secured a world championship title at IEM Katowice 2023. By backing the WTL, HyperGryph is leveraging esports as a marketing vehicle while simultaneously providing essential infrastructure for a community that remains active despite the lack of official publisher support. This move highlights the evolving commercial landscape of Chinese esports, where third-party organizers like SCBOY continue to sustain competitive ecosystems through strategic corporate partnerships.
